John Guest
Etching and lino-printing

Whilst at the RCA John won the Trident Fellowship in 1981, then taught part time at Falmouth School of Art. He continued with his painting at Chisenhale Studios, London. Since joining Gainsborough’s House Print Workshop in 2014, he has been concentrating on etching and lino-printing.

Since leaving art school, John’s work has often swung between very abstract and more figurative imagery. He’s never been overly inspired by the ‘real world’ but takes from it: playing with its shapes and colours, allowing them to enter, exit and move around his ‘stage’.

Lines from his sketchbooks dominate, and so etching and lino-printing are ideal media for his style. John’s work is lighthearted and playful in the main although shadows lurk and flit.

John’s recent prints have been made in the Gainsborough’s House Print Workshop since its reopening this summer, after refurbishment. Some of this new imagery was prompted by seeing the Flemish landscape paintings on show earlier in the year at Gainsborough’s House.
